Everyone knows that many factors are involved in determining what you pay for your auto insurance. Factors such as where you live and what you drive, your age, sex and marital status are just a few. One of the biggest factors, however, is your driving record. Having a bad, or even less than perfect driving record will make you a higher risk to the insurance companies and therefore you will pay hundreds more than the a person of the same age, sex, vehicle and marital status, living in the same area, with a better driving record.
Among the citations to have the highest impact on premiums is reckless driving. Reckless driving as defined by Nolo’s Plain-English Law Dictionary is, “Operating an automobile in a dangerous manner under the circumstances, including speeding (or going too fast for the conditions, even if within the posted speed limit) and other careless and dangerous driving behavior.” Many insurance carriers vary different factors together so the rates will change. For example, almost every insurance carriers will raise your rates for a reckless driving penalty, yet one carrier might be a higher raise than another depending on the car you drive or your marital status. For this reason alone, it is wise to contact your insurance broker to get the best rate whenever you get a violation. Ask questions such as “Will a safe driving course help?” and “Do you have discounts if I combine policies?” Your broker should be able to do the comparisons for you, making it easier to keep your premiums down.
