500,000 Routers Affected by VPNFilter Malware

Reset Your Router! Recently, researchers at Talos—a cyber intelligence unit of Cisco—warned consumers of malware (malicious software) that specifically targets networking devices. The malware, which is known as VPNFilter, impacts an estimated 500,000 routers worldwide, particularly targeting devices from the following manufacturers: Linksys MikroTik Netgear QNAP TP-Link VPNFilter Could Collect Your Information Without Your Knowledge Once on your equipment, the malware could stop your router from working, collect information from any systems that run through it and even block network traffic. Experts are concerned over the scope of the attack, as anyone owning a router from the affected manufacturers could be at risk, including businesses and individuals. Cyber Risk Is Everyone’s Business!

Cyber Risk Is Everyone’s Business!

Enough Is Enough! The more we hear about cyber risk, the more people are inclined to cover their ears and say “Enough is Enough!” The problem is, simply being fed up with cyber risk isn’t enough. You need to take action. Today’s technological landscape is evolving at an exponential pace. At the same time, the risk to businesses from malicious cyber-attacks is running in lockstep, if not faster. I recently attended the International Cyber Risk Management Conference in Toronto and the theme was “Cyber Risk is Everyone’s Business.” While we may not be directly involved in or feel we have direct exposure to Cyber Risk, the fact is, like the name says, it is “Everyone’s Business.” Every one of us is touched by cyber risk in some way, and each one of us needs to be aware of our cyber…read more →

Is Your Website Compliant? New Cybersecurity Regulations Coming May 2018

If business owners didn’t already have enough regulations to deal with, updated Cybersecurity Regulations are adding to the increased requirements for compliance. On March 1, 2017, New York State Cybersecurity Regulation went into effect and represented a “first in the nation” approach to stringent data security regulations targeting a specific industry. With New York a prime target for those looking to steal financial information, such a step comes as no surprise. Across the United States, legislators are looking to modernize their legal requirements and impose stringent data security regulations that unlike current laws; will not be open to interpretation by other national governments. These new data protection laws will cast a wider net, applying to any company that offers goods or services to U.S. residents, even if the company is based in Canada or elsewhere. With a new year comes…read more →

Canadians Among Those Affected by Equifax Data Breach

Equifax, one of the largest credit reporting agencies in the United States, was recently the victim of a massive cyber attack—an attack that may have compromised the personal information of 143 million people – including 100,000 Canadians. Impacted individuals were not simply limited to the United States either, as the hackers gained unauthorized access to personal information of approximately 100,000 Canadian residents. Initial reports suggest 209,000 credit card numbers were stolen in the attack, some of which belong to international customers. The breach itself occurred between mid-May and July 2017 when cyber criminals gained access to sensitive data by exploiting a weak point in website software. In the United States, sensitive information like Social Security numbers, birthdays, addresses and driver’s licence numbers were compromised. The recent attack on Equifax is the third major cyber security threat the organization has experienced…read more →

Just 1 Ransomware Attack Can Cost A Company Thousands!

The incidents of ransomware in Canada are rising at an alarming rate. In 2015, Canadians were affected by 1,600 ransomware attacks a day. By September 2016, the number of attacks nearly doubled, and those are only the known cases. Unfortunately, many incidents still go unreported. Businesses of all sizes have become targets of ransomware, as it can infect not only personal computers, but also entire networks and servers. What is Ransomware? Ransomware is malicious software that infects a computer and denies access to the system or data, and demands a sum of money to restore the information. Presently, the most common forms of ransomware will encrypt data. Victims often receive an onscreen alert stating their files have been encrypted or a similar message, depending on the type of ransomware. The message on the lock screen may even claim to come…read more →
