OHIP+ No Longer Covers Kids and Young Adults with Private Insurance Christine Elliott unveiled the PCs ‘cost-effective’ changes to free prescriptions for people under 25. Children, teens and young adults with private health benefits will no longer be eligible to receive free prescriptions through OHIP+, newly appointed Health Minister Christine Elliott announced on Saturday. The “cost-effective” changes to the province’s current pharmacare program are part of the Ontario Progressive Conservative government’s pledge to save billions each year by finding “efficiencies” in government spending, Elliott said in a news release. OHIP+ coverage will now focus on Ontario residents “who do not have existing prescription drug benefits” while also “saving the taxpayers money,” she explained. The malware, which is known as VPNFilter, impacts an estimated 500,000 routers worldwide, particularly targeting devices from the following manufacturers: Linksys MikroTik Netgear QNAP TP-Link VPNFilter Could Collect Your Information Without Your Knowledge Once on your equipment, the malware could stop your router from working, collect information from any systems that run through it and even block network traffic. Experts are concerned over the scope of the attack, as anyone owning a router from the affected manufacturers could be at risk, including businesses and individuals. Canadians Among Those Affected by Equifax Data Breach

Equifax, one of the largest credit reporting agencies in the United States, was recently the victim of a massive cyber attack—an attack that may have compromised the personal information of 143 million people – including 100,000 Canadians. Impacted individuals were not simply limited to the United States either, as the hackers gained unauthorized access to personal information of approximately 100,000 Canadian residents. Initial reports suggest 209,000 credit card numbers were stolen in the attack, some of which belong to international customers. The breach itself occurred between mid-May and July 2017 when cyber criminals gained access to sensitive data by exploiting a weak point in website software. In the United States, sensitive information like Social Security numbers, birthdays, addresses and driver’s licence numbers were compromised. Compliance Bulletin: Government Suspends CASL Legislation

Government Suspends Private Right of Action Provisions of CASL In response to concerns raised by businesses, charities and non-profits, the Government of Canada recently announced it would be suspending the private right of action (PRA) provisions of Canada’s Anti-spam Legislation (CASL). These provisions were scheduled to come into force July 1, 2017, and would have allowed lawsuits to be filed against organizations, as well as their officers, directors and agents, by anyone who felt affected by an act or omission that violated CASL. In its news release, the government said the suspension would allow for a parliamentary committee review of the PRA aspects of CASL. The government hopes this review and PRA suspension will reduce the amount of red tape Canadian organizations must wade through in order to comply with CASL.
